Pre-Employment Background Check: Knowing Someone First before You Hire Them

Posted in on

Everyday, thousands or even millions of people apply for a job. However, only a select few are hired by companies. Because of this situation, a lot of people resort to fraud by falsifying their resumes together with the hope of not getting caught with the fabrication once they get the job.

As an entrepreneur, you know that you want only the best people to work for you. It helps keep your business running like a well-oiled machine and it also builds a good reputation if top qualified professionals are working for you. However, what if applicants try to falsify their resume by making it a little more extravagant in terms of their work experience and also their educational attainment and successes? This can mean trouble especially for your business as your business may be held liable for the actions of your employee.

For example:

Try imagining that you own a cleaning business where people hire your company to clean homes and office buildings. You then send two of your new employees to clean a home who hired your company for your services. After the job, you found out that the two new employees didn't return to your company and the home they supposedly cleaned was burglarized. After a few days, it turns out that your two new ex-employees were the ones who burglarized the house and the authorities found out that they had criminal records. You didn't perform a background check on those two people who applied in your company. If this is the case, your company will also be implicated to the crime.

As you can see, performing a background check is very important as it can minimize the risk of lawsuit.

By performing a pre-employment background check, you will be able to know if the potential employees for your company has no criminal records and is really who they say they are.

There are a lot of background checks that you can do aside from obtaining criminal records. You can also check whether the potential employee in question is really a degree holder. You can get a hold of their academic records and check whether they are indeed licensed professionals as what they stated in their resume. You have to consider that there was even a man who has risen to the position of CFO and executive vice president in a large software company until it was found out that the person in question didn't really hold an MBA degree as what he stated on his resume. When it was found out that he didn't actually have an MBA degree, he was immediately fired.

Another example is by getting a potential employee's Motor Vehicle Records report or MVR report, especially if the position he or she is applying for is a position that will include driving. Through this, you will be able to know if he or she has been involved in an automobile accident and held liable or have been guilty of DUI or driving under influence.

These are the benefits of performing a pre-employment background check. Although it may cost you some money when you do this, but you can be sure that only the best and only the professionals will be able to enter and be part of your company. Also, by performing a background check, you will be able to minimize the risk of a lawsuit because of the actions of your new employee.

So, before you hire someone, make sure you first do a pre-employment background check among the potential candidates for employment. Whether it is checking for DUI records, criminal records or academic records, performing a background check should always be practiced.
